Bringing home the medals!

A fantastic 100% winning record at the U21s Euros over in Konya, Turkey, saw Anna McWilliams, Caterina Nelli and Lexie MacMillan take home winners medals as part of the Scotland U21s Women’s set up.

Nelli was on the score sheet in the opening 3-1 win over Ukraine that was followed by a 2-1 win over Poland. A 4-0 victory over hosts Turkey set up a second showdown with Ukraine. Despite dropping to nine players at one stage, Scotland triumphed in a tight contest 1-0 to win the tournament and book a place at the Junior World Cup in 2025.

Gareth Ikin, Director of Hockey, joined the Ladies team out in Turkey. He commented:

“It was a fantastic achievement for the Scotland U21 Women to win Euro II B, and with it sealing a Junior World Cup spot for Scotland for the first time since 2005. It was a fantastic week where Anna, Cat and Lexie all played very well throughout the course of the tournament, and great to have a number of Uddingston players selected for the U21 women’s squad to compete in Turkey. A great achievement for all 3 players and the club as a whole!”

Over in Switzerland it was shining Silver for Jedd Campbell and the Scotland U21s Men.

They opened the Euros with a confident 4-0 win over Finland with Jedd amongst the scorers. The U21s were forced to dig deep in the second game rallying late on to claw back a 3-3 draw with Wales. Jedd was back on the score sheet in game three as Scotland dispatched Czechia 9-2 and headed to their final match against hosts Switzerland on a high. The hosts though stood firm for a 2-2 draw and meant Jedd and his Scotland teammates came away with Silver.

Meanwhile, our Scotland Aspiring call-ups headed off to Granada for the Summer 8-Nations.

Angus Millar and Ben Young represented Uddy for the Aspiring Boys as they took on Belgium, Ireland, The Netherlands, and England.

Verity Shields from our Ladies 1s represented us for the Aspiring Girls as they faced Belgium, Ireland, Spain, and Germany.

Both Aspiring teams faced stern tests over the 8 Nations against the highest calibre opposition for the age groups.

Ruaridh McDonald was called up for just his second time to the Emerging Boys Squad as they headed to Lilleshall for the 4-Nations.

Scotland’s Emerging side played against Germany, England, and Belgium as they too were tested by some of Europe’s best at the age group.

Gareth Ikin, Director of Hockey:

“It is a great achievement for all players to have been selected to represent Scotland at all squad levels, and wonderful to see 8 players across all of the Scotland squads selected for competitions over the last couple of weeks. It shows that as a club we help nurture talent in the club environment to help them flourish on the international stage, and with new exciting additions and developments happening for next season and beyond, we will continue to be the club that will support and enhance their development.

Huge congratulations to all those selected, I’m sure there would have been so many fantastic learning and development opportunities for our players whilst away competing, and look forward to seeing them bringing these back into the club environment once we get into the full flow of the season.”
