McDades: Driving Uddy Forward On and Off the Pitch

March 24, 2025

For the past five to six years, McDades has been an integral part of Uddingston Hockey Club, supporting both the club and its surrounding community.

Their involvement has extended beyond just sponsorship – they’ve played a key role in the development of grassroots hockey, helping young players discover and enjoy the sport. We caught up with Andy McDade to discuss their involvement over the years.

Beyond their logistical support, McDades has witnessed firsthand the incredible growth of Uddingston Hockey Club. From improvements to the pitches to the launch of Uddy TV and even being named European Club of the Year, the transformation has been eye-opening.

“You like to see success coming for something you’re working with,” Andy shared.

That personal connection to the club has only deepened, as McDades’ next generation is now involved – Cameron, their son, is part of the club’s primary school sessions on Monday nights.

“He absolutely loves hockey. It looks as if there’s another one in the family following in their footsteps!”

A Commitment to Community

McDades’ partnership with Uddy extends into the wider community, supporting local schools such as Uddingston, Muiredge, Bothwell, and St Brides, and even assisting with summer fetes. Their dedication to youth sports doesn’t stop with hockey – through a partnership with Queen’s Park FC, they help schoolchildren attend football matches, ensuring access to sport for those who might not otherwise get the opportunity.

Post-COVID, McDades has also expanded its business into tourism, growing organically over the last three years. They now cater to visiting cruise ships, arranging day trips, and even welcoming international pipe bands from Germany, Holland, and the U.S. In response to this growing demand, they’ve transitioned from minibuses to full-size coaches, ensuring they continue to provide top-quality service.

Why Uddy?

For McDades, supporting Uddy is about more than just hockey – it’s about an ethos.

“With family involved, I know about elitism in hockey, but what I love about Uddy is their commitment to bringing hockey to schools that are less well off. Some kids won’t get the opportunity to play hockey. Some of them maybe didn’t even know there was a game called field hockey – they’d only see the Mighty Ducks!”

This commitment to inclusivity and opportunity is what makes Uddy special to McDades. “It exposes them to something completely different, and I loved that about Uddy.”

Over the years, McDades has backed the club wholeheartedly. Their support, whether through transport, logistics, or grassroots initiatives, has helped strengthen the bond between their company and the community.

“You’re letting them know you’re paying back,” Andy explained. And in return, Uddy continues to grow, develop, and provide opportunities for young players, ensuring the sport reaches as many people as possible.

Thanks to McDades, Uddingston Hockey Club is going from strength to strength – both on and off the pitch.
